Colt’s iconic “snake guns” have captivated revolver enthusiasts for decades, and Day 4 of Revolver Week delivers a head-to-head comparison that feels like a celebration of that heritage. In this video, the spotlight is on two charismatic variants of the modern Colt Python .357 Magnum — the classic 3-inch model and the more tactical Combat Elite — as they duke it out in a range-side showdown that’s both informative and downright fun.

What Makes These Revolvers Special?

Before diving into the comparison, it’s worth appreciating what the Colt Python represents in the revolver world. Originally introduced in the mid-20th century, the Python earned its reputation for smooth trigger action, tight lockup, and an almost artistic finish — traits that made it one of the most beloved .357 Magnum wheelguns ever made. After going out of and back into production, Colt reintroduced the Python line in 2020 with modern engineering improvements, making the legacy alive again for today’s shooters. The top strap is 30% thicker. Colt maintained the Colt choked barrel design maintaing it’s superior accuracy it is known for, and that famously known ribbed barrel.

Python 3″ — The Classic Compact Snake

The 3-inch Python in this video feels very much like the classic revolver that put Colt’s snake guns on the map. Compact and balanced, it offers that traditional aesthetic with polished stainless steel and fluted cylinder — features that many fans argue capture the heart of what a Python should feel like. In comparisons and community feedback, owners often praise the classic’s look and balance, even if they debate grip comfort. The grips on the Standard Catalog model features larger target grips which make it a bit more challenging to conceal. The famous ribbed barrel sports a recessed target crown, ramped front sight with a red insert, with the rear sight being adjustable for windage left to right and evelation adjustment.

The classic Python is portrayed as nimble and responsive on the range, with sights and feel that appeal to purists and collectors alike. Its smooth double-action pull and friendly size make it a versatile option for both range sessions and practical carry discussions especially in the winter time when wearing heavy clothing making it easier to conceal the larger wood grips.

Combat Elite — Tactical Twist on a Legend

On the other side of the ring is the Combat Elite version — Colt’s more modern, utilitarian spin on the Python. Equipped with a 3″ barrel like the classic, the Combat Elite differentiates itself with G10 boot grips, unfluted cylinder, and night front sight — all clues to its tactical leanings.

I appreciate these tweaks because they enhance handling under recoil and improve sight acquisition in varying light conditions. In range drills shown in the video, the Combat Elite impresses with confident handling and a slightly different feel that’s heavier in the rear perhaps more driven by the unfluted cylinder. After a few sessions now I found myself shooting a bit higher than the Classic 3in model. Though the boot grips make it easier to conceal but mind you the Combat Elite is heavier due to the unfluted cylinder.

Head-to-Head Feel

The narrative across Revolver Week Day 4 doesn’t just focus on specs — it’s about how these two feel and perform in the real world:

• Handling & Balance: Both guns handle exceptionally well, but the Combat Classic’s grips may offer a bit more control under heavy 357Magnum recoil.

• Aesthetics & Tradition: The Classic Python pulls ahead for those who cherish traditional design with a fluted cylinder and shiny steel.

• Practical Use: With its night sights and tactical touches, the Combat Elite feels more ready for varied environments.

• Range Performance: Though specifics depend on ammo and shooter skill, the 3″ barrels on both deliver satisfying performance — accurate and balanced for typical .357 Magnum use. Both turned in respectable 2.5in groups from 15yards using a Ransom Multi Caliber Rest.

Colt, Let’s Partner and Build the Perfect 3-Inch Python

Both of these revolvers are special in their own right, but if I were to build the perfect 3-inch Python for both duty and range use, I’d take a slightly different approach.

My revolver would start with the classic base model. From there, I would upgrade the front and rear sights to D&L Sports Hard-Use Night Sights for improved visibility and real-world practicality. I would retain the fluted cylinder, as it offers better balance and weight reduction while preserving the timeless Python aesthetic.

Finally, I’d borrow one modern touch from the Combat Elite by installing its G10 boot grips. They provide excellent control, durability, and comfort without sacrificing the revolver’s classic lines.

The result would be a Perfect 3-Inch Python—a seamless blend of tradition and modern performance, equally at home on the range or on duty.
