22LR Know Your Skills Challenge
Ron H Joins All Three Challenges With A Strong Showing
WOW this looks to be a beautiful morning for Ron and a great story to boot. Thank you for sharing with us.
As you can see by my pictures, I am the proud owner of a CZ457 Trainer. I really should tell the story of how I came to know of CZ rifles. Back in 1975 at the tender age of 10 I read a story in one of my Dads Field and Stream’s or Sports Afield magazine’s about a gentleman who went to Germany on a driven boar hunt. As a sidebar story he wrote about a little known rifle (at that time in the West) called a CZ BRNO .22 rimfire rifle. The story only contained one picture of the rifle with its plain wood stock and Schnabel fore end, well needless to say I was quite smitten. However, at that time and for many more years CZ lay behind the iron curtain and were off limits for the most part. I had many .22lr rifles over the years but I always remembered the little CZ rifle.
Well in March of 2021 I finally bought my CZ457 Trainer. She appears to be the closest I could get to the original CZ BRNO rifle that I saw all those years ago. I wanted her for many reasons, one was because I wanted a rifle similar in usage to my Winchester Model 70 to use as a trainer. The second was to use chasing Squirrels on the old family farm in North East Mississippi and the third was for fun. I love to shoot and it is getting both hard to find components for reloading and expensive, so, to find a rim fire that I could take to the range and spend $20 for ammo on and shoot 100 rounds sounded great to me.
Once in my hands I took the fantastic iron sights off so that I could mount my 2×7 Leupold rim fire scope as low as possible over the bore and secondly, my old eyes just can’t handle three aim points. Yes, 2×7 scope, that is what is mounted on my Model 70 and I wanted to approximate my shooting experience between the two so the CZ would be a good trainer.
With SK Standard Plus I am getting .5” groups, at 50 yards on a very consistent basis. Looking forward to chasing Squirrels with it this fall. I have spent so much time with my new rifle that my wife has started calling her my “Czech Girlfriend”! Actually, she has had a great time shooting her as well and is to the point that she is wanting a Czech Boyfriend for herself. I am all for it, my son can’t compete with his 10/22 and the only people at our range that seem to do better are the serious bench rest shooters. I found your site a couple of months ago and am loving it, you are making very good quality videos that are enjoyable to watch. Actually, I generally only watch you and Buffalo Outdoors. I have been to the site several times and enjoy the content very much. Keep up the good work and have fun. Oh, by the way, like your buddy I am ex Air Force, or Chair Force as you like to say, Ha Ha.
